Montane Shrew

rule
Lateral side of right dentary of fossil Sorex monticolus.

Montane Shrews occur at high mountains in the Southwest today, but are found as fossils at lower elevations. All teeth are present in this lower jaw specimen. The dark red pigmentation tipping the teeth and the nearly horizontal, enlarged incisor are typical of most North American shrews. The jaw is magnified here from the few millimeters in actual length.
