Glyptodont

A segment of a glyptodont carapace from the Rio Grande Valley sediments is shown along with a single scute. The carapace segment is on exhibit in the William Strain Paleontology Gallery.

Glyptodonts are extinct relatives of armadillos and sloths. These were large, heavily armored creatures roughly 6 or more feet long. A picture of a mounted skeleton can be seen at an American Museum of Natural History site, and the BBC shows a reconstruction.
