Until recently, the North American spadefoots were placed in the family Pelobatidae. That family has now been recognized as being restricted to the Old World, with the New World species assigned to the family Scaphiopodidae. Also until relatively recently, the North American species were all placed in the genus Scaphiopus; this genus now has been split into Scaphiopus and Spea.
