This version of the Chihuahuan Desert was constructed by Morafka (1977a, 1977b) on the basis of physical characteristics and the distribution of herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles).
The dark green areas are filter barriers--areas of generally unsuitable habitat but which do allow rare passage.
